Anya Brumfield – 2nd Prize 2016
Anya Brumfield is currently a senior at Homewood-Flossmoor Community High School in Flossmoor, IL where she is concertmaster of the Viking and Symphonic Strings Orchestras. A member of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras since 2012, she has held principle positions in both Debut and Concert Orchestras and for the pas two seasons she has been a member of Symphony and Encore Chamber Orchestra. As a member of the CYSO, Anya has performed at the United Center during Chicago Bulls games and with various artists including Ben Folds. She was selected to perform with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s 2015 Youth In Music Festival Orchestra under the baton of Riccardo Muti. Anya has performed as a member of the CYSO chamber music program for two seasons and currently performs as a participant in the Music Institute of Chicago’s chamber
music program. As co-winner of the 2014 CYSO Concert Orchestra Concerto Competition, Anya performed the first movement of the Mendelssohn violin concerto with the orchestra. This spring she was featured in the Rising Star Showcase hosted by the Friends of the Illinois Philharmonic. Anya performed for Rachel Barton Pine and guests at the 2015 Rachel Elizabeth Barton Foundation Fall Celebration. She also received third place at the 2014 American Music Institute Violin Competition, an honorable mention at the 2013 University of Illinois- Chicago Youth Concerto Competition, and has been a member of the Illinois Music Educators Association All- State Honors Orchestra in 2015 and 2016.
Anya currently studies violin with Artist-Faculty member Addison Teng at the Music Institute of Chicago where she is a recipient of an Artists of Tomorrow merit scholarship. She has received merit scholarships from the Montecito International Music Festival and the Sphinx Performance Academy. Through competitive audition, Anya has played in master classes for Noah Bendix-Balgley, first concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic and Emanuel Borok, retired concertmaster of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Anya will continue her education at Indiana University-Jacobs School of Music this fall under merit scholarship to pursue a degree in violin performance.
